Statement result. Arsenal 2–1 Chelsea. Declared bias, so the bad bit first: the champions conceded after 77 seconds because nobody cleared a Reece James free-kick, and Morgan Rogers volleyed it in. After that it was Arsenal's match. Havertz equalised against his old club on 25 minutes, Ødegaard finished a flowing move five minutes after the break, and a Chelsea side that had scored early in every game so far finished on 0.39 xG. Raya still had to make a late save from Estêvão. Three from three, level with City.

Biggest surprise. Fulham 2–3 Crystal Palace. Fulham had 25 shots to 10, 3.14 xG to 1.97, and a 2–1 lead at half-time. Mitchell scored twice and Chilwell added the third on 77 minutes. Fulham did enough to win and finished like a side that didn't.

Worst decision. Manchester United didn't sign a defender, and have now conceded twice in each of their first three league games. At Everton they led twice, through Mbeumo a minute into the second half and a Sesko header on 88, and still drew, because Ainsley Maitland-Niles, signed on the Tuesday, came off the bench and put a 30-yard shot into the top corner in the 96th minute.

Ipswich. Liverpool's first win of the season came at Portman Road on Friday, and the first nine minutes were the match: Isak scored on six and nine, both from Gakpo passes. Ipswich had more shots and near-identical xG, and none of that counts once you've shipped two before the tenth minute.

What I got wrong. Two draws landed off the coupon. Forest 0–0 Tottenham was the most evenly priced match on the card and I left the draw out anyway; Spurs didn't manage a shot on target. Brentford 1–1 Sunderland went in as a single, and Sunderland had the better xG and five shots on target to two before Le Fée's 82nd-minute penalty. That was bad reasoning, not bad luck. Hull 0–0 Aston Villa went the other way: Villa built nearly two xG, put one shot on target, and Hull have seven points from three.
