Biggest surprise. Norwich City 1–2 West Bromwich Albion. Preseason chatter has had Norwich near the top of most people's Championship table for months, and that survives exactly one opening weekend before a home defeat to West Brom. One match never decides a season, but it's the one score from the weekend that doesn't fit the story being told about this division before a ball was kicked.
Statement result. Portsmouth 1–3 Queens Park Rangers. Three goals on the road on the opening weekend is a loud way to start a season, and QPR didn't need much fuss to do it.
Quiet corner. Three matches finished level — Wolverhampton Wanderers 2–2 Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield United 0–0 Birmingham City, and Cardiff City 1–1 Wrexham — including the round's only goalless draw. Nothing dramatic in any of them, which is its own kind of information about how the season opened.
No forecasts were made for this round — nothing here to score.
