Biggest surprise. Burnley 1–2 Bristol City. Burnley came down from the Premier League with the budget to go straight back up, and they are now five league games without a win. At home to a side that had lost the last eight league meetings between them and hadn't won at Turf Moor in nearly twenty years, they managed eight shots and 0.26 xG. Bristol City have won three straight. Burnley have two points and a parachute.
Statement result. Stoke 4–0 Charlton, and it was 4–0 at half-time. Charlton arrived as the division's last unbeaten side and finished with ten men. Stoke lost their first three games; they have now won two running.
Relegated, and suddenly fine. West Ham 3–0 Derby: twenty shots to four, and Derby didn't put one on target. Four days after the 4–2 over Wolves, the side that lost at home to Charlton in August looks like it has worked out which division it's in.
Something for Preston. The MW4 note left them on played four, lost four. They were 2–0 up at half-time against Blackburn and held on for 2–1. Recorded here precisely because the last note was so rude about them.
Also. Millwall answered eight goals conceded in two games with a 4–0 over Bolton in which both sides had a man sent off. Norwich won 3–1 at Sheffield United with nearly four times the home side's xG, and the scoreline flattered nobody.
What I got wrong. Burnley went in as a single, and the reasoning behind it was the name on the shirt rather than four matches of evidence. It was the loud miss of the round. The relegated-club trim on West Ham, retired this week after costing again, gets its obituary from Derby's shot map.
